## How We Get to Santa Fe
Most trips from our Albuquerque shop to Santa Fe run straight up I-25. The other road in is NM 14, the Turquoise Trail, which runs through the East Mountains and ends in Santa Fe, so we use it when we also have a stop in Cedar Crest.
Santa Fe covers about 52.3 square miles and had 87,505 people at the 2020 Census, so give us your street and nearest cross street.

## Short-Term Rentals: Rekey Between Guests or Go Keyless
A guest checked out, the key never came back, and new guests arrive in three days. Now you have a choice: rekey that lock so the missing key is dead, or put a keypad on the door so there's no key to lose next time. We can do either one, or both, on a single booked visit.
First, the rules belong to the City, not to us. Santa Fe defines a short-term rental as any dwelling unit rented for less than 30 calendar days. Each one needs a Business Registration plus a permit or registration that depends on zoning. For anything about permits, check the [City of Santa Fe short-term rental page](https://santafenm.gov/land-use/short-term-rentals). We handle the locks.

### Rekey or keypad?
Rekey when a key goes missing and bookings are spread out. If guests turn over every few days, a keypad usually makes more sense: each guest gets a code you delete at checkout. Keep one keyed backup somewhere secure. See [how to install a smart lock](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/how-to-install-a-smart-lock-step-by-step/) and our [complete guide to rekeying your home's locks](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/complete-guide-rekeying-locks-home/).
Guest kept the key? Book a rekey or keypad install before the next check-in.

## Older and Historic Homes: Locks Without Changing the Door
Your adobe's front door lock is worn out, and you're wondering whether fixing it means going through City review. Start with the lock, not the door. Rekeying works inside your existing lock and leaves the door alone. If you plan to replace an exterior door in a historic district, check with the City's Historic Preservation Division first.
About 19% of Santa Fe homes were built before 1960, per the U.S. Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey. The City's [Historic Districts application](https://santafenm.gov/media/files/land_use/2023_Historic_Districts_Application.pdf) lists windows and doors among repair requests that may need Historic Districts Review Board approval, and it lists door replacement as district dependent.
If the work would change the door itself, get the City's answer first, then we fit the lock to the approved door. Our [rekeying vs. lock replacement cost comparison](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/rekeying-vs-lock-replacement-cost-comparison/) and [ultimate guide to lock maintenance](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/ultimate-guide-to-lock-maintenance/) walk through the trade-offs.

## Second Homes and Property Manager Changes
You own a second home in Santa Fe and you just switched property managers. The old manager, the cleaners and maybe a caretaker all had keys. Rekeying every exterior lock makes those keys useless in one visit. If you keep a car at the house, we can program a key fob for it on the same trip.
You have company. About 2,000 Santa Fe homes are held for seasonal, recreational or occasional use, per the same Census survey.
Plan it as one trip so the drive is spread across several jobs. More on [key fob replacement and programming](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/key-fob-replacement-programming/) and [5 signs you need to rekey your home locks](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/signs-you-need-rekey-home-locks/).

Santa Fe questions

## Asked and answered
Seven questions we hear from Santa Fe callers, answered the way we would on the phone.

### ### Does Roadrunner Lock and Key have a Santa Fe office?
No. Our only shop is at 3803 3rd St NW in Albuquerque, about 61 miles from Santa Fe, roughly 70 minutes by car with no traffic. We drive up for scheduled work such as rekeys, keypad installs and key fob programming. For an emergency, call (505) 347-2895 for a real arrival time; if you cannot wait that long, a Santa Fe-based locksmith may be faster.

### ### Can you rekey the lock on a home in a Santa Fe historic district without replacing the door?
Yes. Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing lock so old keys stop working, and the door and hardware stay where they are. If you are planning to replace an exterior door in a historic district, check with the City of Santa Fe Historic Preservation Division first, because door replacement can require review there. We can then fit the lock to the approved door.

### ### My mother's caregiver lost her house key in Santa Fe. Can I book a rekey from Albuquerque?
Yes. Call (505) 347-2895 with her address, a time when you or someone she trusts can be there, and the number of doors. We will quote the price, including any travel charge, and book the visit. Rekeying means the lost key stops working. Ask for a few new keys for family and the caregiver, and keep a record of who has one.

### ### For a Santa Fe short-term rental, should I rekey between guests or install a keypad lock?
Rekey when a key goes missing; it is the quickest fix for a lock you already have. If guests turn over often, a keypad or smart lock usually works out better, because each guest gets a code you delete at checkout and nothing physical goes missing. Keep one keyed backup in a secure place. We install keypads and rekey the remaining locks on the same visit.

### ### How do I know an out-of-town locksmith will actually show up in Santa Fe?
Get specifics before you book: the business name, a street address you can find on Google Maps, the total price including travel, and a scheduled time. A company that will not tell you where it is based, or promises minutes it cannot deliver from 61 miles away, is a warning sign. Roadrunner Lock and Key tells you all of that at (505) 347-2895.

### ### Does the drive from Albuquerque change the price of a Santa Fe job?
It can, and we tell you before you book. Santa Fe is about 61 miles from our shop, so we quote the total on the phone, including any travel charge, when you call (505) 347-2895. Grouping work into one visit, such as rekeying the house, installing a keypad and programming a fob, spreads that drive across several jobs and is usually the best value.

### ### I changed property managers at my Santa Fe second home. Can you rekey everything, add a keypad and program a car fob in one trip?
Yes, that is the kind of Santa Fe job we plan best. Call (505) 347-2895 with the number of exterior doors, the keypad you want or need advice on, and the car's year, make and model. We will confirm we can program that vehicle, quote the full job including any travel charge, and book one visit so the old manager's keys stop working the same day.

## Book a Santa Fe Visit
Need a rekey, keypad, deadbolt or key fob in Santa Fe? Call (505) 347-2895 to book. Roadrunner Lock and Key quotes the total before we make the 61-mile drive from Albuquerque, and we give you a real arrival time for the day we set. No guesses, and no surprises at your door.
